  • The Psychology of Racism: The Impact of Racism, Stigma, and Discrimination on Academic Achievement of Black Males - Facilitator: Andre Fields

The purpose of this presentation will be to capture, outline, and summarize the intersection between race, racism, and the persistent pattern of poor life outcomes amongst Black males. This presentation will also highlight a racially-contextualized programmatic solution currently operating and demonstrating positive impact on Black males attending Grand Rapids Community College. This presentation will also present specific strategies for effectively engaging Black male students in enriching developmental activities that sequentially build the developmental assets necessary for achieving success.

  • Global Awareness, Identity, and High Impact Learning through Study Away - Facilitator: Hillery Haney

This session will focus on our own cultural identity and perception and how it relates to others in a global society as well as creating a high impact learning experience through Study Away opportunities.

  • Past Forward: GRCC Faculty and Institutional Memory - Facilitator: Michael Klawitter

This session will explore the faculty's role in preserving institutional memory at GRCC and provide best practices to contribute to this endeavor.

  • Guided Pathways Initiative at GRCC: Goals, Update, and Feedback - Facilitators: Jennifer Batten and Tina Hoxie

The Guided Pathways Initiative is well underway at GRCC and due to the work of the Instructional Support office and the academic departments significant progress has been made in the areas of pathway development and curriculum alignment. Further, there are cross campus teams working to shape the student and academic experience with guided pathways from first contact with the College, through the application, orientation, and course/program advising processes, and then on to completion. The goal of this presentation is to share the goals and status of this initiative and to gather feedback and ideas that can be incorporated into the project.


  • Make Your Home Among Strangers - Facilitator: Sheila Jones

Participants in this session will have the opportunity to discuss Jennine Capó Crucet’s novel, Make Your Home Among Strangers, which follows a young woman’s transition from South Florida to a college in the Northeast. We’ll use the book to talk about belonging and how we can help our students with their transition into college life. While it’s not required that you read the book beforehand, if you would like to, we can order you a copy.  See a review of the book.

  • What is accessibility and why does it matter? - Facilitators: Kimberly Devries and Sarah Rose

This session will look at the "Why" of accessibility, and the importance of collaboration in this area. Kimberly DeVries, Director of Equal Opportunity Compliance, will discuss briefly the laws/policies that influence our decisions around accessibility here at GRCC. Sarah Rose, Director of Disability Support Services, will focus on the DSS process, including how accommodations decisions are made, faculty's role in the process, and how we troubleshoot complications.  Come if you have questions about the requirements, process, or if you want to gain more insight into the needs of students in this area.

  • Student Academic Advising - Facilitators: Erin Busscher and Lynnae Selberg

This session will cover the basics of academic advising for transfer students and workforce students. You will learn about the resources available for you and for your students to help with advising.

  • Helping Students Plan for Graduation using the new & improved My Degree Path - Facilitator: Amanda Kruzona

My Degree Path is a powerful tool when advising students and helping them build a path to degree completion. There have been some changes to the look and function of the tool due to an upgrade in November. This training will review how these changes impact the various functions of My Degree Path so that you can use all this new functionality when advising students.


  • How to Use Your Lecture Book as the Spine of Your Course - Facilitators: Matt Douglas

In this presentation, I would like to point out how just recommending a "reference" textbook is not in the best interests of our students, and that having a designated textbook for all sections of a multi-sectioned course would be a great advantage, especially if professors actually used the book as the "bible" of the course (puns intended) I have not quite worked up the outline as of yet, but I can promise you it will be interesting!

  • Teaching for Learning: Educational Activities to Put Students on the Path to Success - Facilitators: Kelli Fedder and Deb Vilmont

Join us as we explore and share classroom strategies from the book: Teaching for Learning: 101 Intentionally Designed Educational Activities to Put Students on the Path to Success. Teaching for Learning provides instructors with a resource grounded in the academic knowledge base, written in an easily accessible, engaging, and practical style.  The book provides a valuable catalog of 101 learning activities that can easily be adapted to any course.  An instructor need never run out of effective teaching and learning strategies.  Lucky participants could win their own personal copies of the book!

  • Student Academic Dishonesty; Will You Know It When You See It? - Facilitator: Greg Forbes

This workshop will explore the incidence of cheating and the methods employed by students to cheat in our on-line and in-seat classes. Participants will examine their own learning environments to determine if they may facilitate or even foster student cheating. Management strategies will be presented and a facilitated discussion will allow participants to share their concerns and experiences with this pervasive problem in higher education.

  • Outcomes & Instructional Strategies, Aligning Courses to Facilitate Student Success - Facilitator: Katie Daniels

Assessment of student learning in courses should reveal how well students have learned what we want them to learn.  Instruction ensures that they learn it.  Closely aligning instructional strategies and assessment activities to Course Learning Outcomes and Institutional Learning Outcome Competencies allows us to know how much students have learned and identify areas to improve instruction.  This session demonstrates what ideal courses alignment looks like, and provides opportunities to consider how to improve alignment in the courses we teach.


  • Camtasia + Swivl + Youtube = Flipping the Heck Out of your Classroom! - Facilitator: Drew Rozema

In this interactive session Prof. Rozema will take you through the process of creating an engaging online lecture capture using Camtasia Studio, the Swivl Capture Robot (optional), and Youtube to create accessible online lectures to use as study aids for your students or help you flip your classroom.

  • How to Cheat Online - Facilitator: Garry Brand

No, this session is NOT about dating sites. Instead, we will explore ways that students cheat (academically) online. We'll learn how to use technology, course design, assessment and other strategies to reduce the opportunities for cheating. Bring your stories, tips and questions!

  • Gadgets and Tools You Can Use Tomorrow - Facilitator: Gary Ebels

There have never been so many resources, gadgets and tools available to us in educational and personal technology. There are also some very promising tools and gadgets due out which will have a profound effect on both our time in the classroom as well as out. Get an overview of some of these tools and gadgets. Bring one to share.

  • Creating Accessible Word Documents - Facilitator: Meegan Willi

Getting into the habit of creating accessible documents from the beginning will save you time later. In this hands-on session, we will look at how to structure an accessible document using Microsoft Word. We will also cover how to use GRCC's Accessible Syllabus Template. Some of the steps that you will learn can also be applied to Excel and PowerPoint files. Plus, once you have an accessible Word document, you can convert it to other formats while retaining it's accessibility.

  • GRCC: Our Changing Community - Facilitator: Tamber Bustance

Who are our students? How is our GRCC community changing? In this interactive workshop, we will explore GRCC’s rich culture that exists within our faculty, staff and student body. We will also examine the many aspects of culture that enrich our campus, connect with other GRCC faculty and share best practices on cross cultural communication.

Institutional Information

  • Everything you always wanted to know about HLC accreditation but were afraid to ask - Facilitators: Laurie Chesley and Donna Kragt

During this session, all of the mysteries of accreditation will be revealed.   Attendees will leave with an understanding of the process that GRCC undergoes to maintain its HLC accreditation, as well as the standards to which we are held as an institution.


  • No More Excuses - Facilitator: Laura Kennett

We all know that we should exercise, however, finding time for it can be challenging. This session will allow you to identify the barriers that may be keeping you from fitting some fitness into your life! Tips and tricks to overcome pitfalls will be discussed. The health benefits of cardiovascular, strength, and circuit training will be presented and participants will walk away with an exercise routine, featuring GRCC Exercise Science students, that can be immediately put into practice as soon as you get home! This session will be the first step towards a fit, productive year!

Student Services

  • Educating in the Bedroom: Consent, Healthy Relationships, and Advocating for our Students - Facilitator: Kimberly Devries

Led by Kimberly DeVries, GRCC's Title IX Coordinator, this session will explore why we talk so often about sexual misconduct, and why it is an integral part of an educational institution.  We will share case studies and examples of issues that arise and how the college responds to those issues. We'll also discuss the themes we emphasize with students: consent and communication in particular, and how those lead to healthy relationships. We'll talk about the resources we offer, and the ways (big and small) we address this issue at GRCC. Bring your questions and suggestions on how we can better engage our students (and our faculty) in this discussion.

  • Student Academic Advising - Facilitators: Erin Busscher and Lynnae Selberg

This session will cover the basics of academic advising for transfer students and workforce students. You will learn about the resources available for you and for your students to help with advising.

  • Panel: Veteran Students Discuss Their Transition to College

Several veteran students will discuss their transition to college, their obstacles, concerns, and also the positive factors.  They will also be available to answer questions about their experiences in the classroom and higher education. 


  • Reading Apprenticeship - Facilitator: Vikki Cooper

Reading Apprenticeship is a framework which encourages instructors to model reading and thinking skills in their prospective disciplines. You will learn how to make your critical thinking and reading skills visible to your students in order to demystify specific disciplinary reading skills. This session will focus on giving you the tools to assist students in understanding how to "change gears" while reading in different disciplines. The skills needed in reading a fictitious novel is different than the skills needed to read a biology textbook.

  • Want your students out of the classroom? Try Academic Service Learning! - Facilitators: 1:00 pm - Kate Byerwalter, Melanie Schiele-Gady, and John Rumery, 2:15 pm - Sherry Knoppers, Leigh Kleinert, and John Rumery

This session provides listeners an opportunity to learn more about how to incorporate Academic Service Learning into a course. Seasoned ASL faculty members will share their tips, struggles, and Armen Award winning ideas for getting students outside of the classroom, applying learning outcomes in the "real world".  Faculty will also present on the Engaged Department Initiative.  There will be time for questions and discussion in addition to the presentations. Join us!

  • The power of positive coaching in the classroom - Facilitator: Brian Hadley

The words we use and the way we say them, is powerful. Come join a discussion which will focus on the impact of a teacher's use of language in and out of the classroom.

  • Reflective Writing Across the Curriculum - Facilitator: Jim Hayes

This session will focus on the definition of reflective writing, and explain how this form of writing might be used across a variety of courses. Both in-class and outside, formal writing assignments will be discussed.

  • Open Educational Resources Faculty Discussion Panel - Facilitator: Brent Spitler

Over the course of the past year, a number of GRCC Faculty have adopted OER materials. This session will be an informal discussion of the challenges and benefits of adopting these open source materials. Additional GRCC Information on OER can be found at www.grcc.edu/oer.

  • Linking Library Resources into Blackboard - Facilitator: Nan Schichtel

Learn easy - and legal - ways to provide permalinks to licensed library resources (e-books, e-journal articles, and streaming videos) in your Blackboard courses. This session will teach you how to find and use permalinks to populate your Blackboard with quality college-level content. Participants must be Blackboard users (faculty/instructional or staff/organization) with rights to edit course/organization content.

  • The Pillars of Honors at GRCC - Facilitator: Amy Kudrna

This session will provide an overview of these pillars and how they will be embedded in the Honors student experience.  Faculty will also learn how they can be involved in GRCC's Honors Program. 


  • Beyond the Discussion Board: Using Online Tools to Increase Student Engagement - Facilitator: Tony Dykema-VanderArk

Online discussion forums can be a great way to get students “talking” to each other outside of class, but they aren't the only way to encourage interaction and engagement beyond the classroom walls. This session will review some other free tools that can make it easier for students to collaborate, for teachers and students to communicate, and for classes to build community.

  • Blackboard/Web Accessibility: Experiencing is Believing - Facilitators: Patrick Lapenna, Bettye Nellett and Leigh Jajuga

Developing web-accessible materials may seem cumbersome or even overwhelming, at times. But what is it like for people with sight and hearing disabilities to learn from inaccessible web content? This session will allow you to experience this first hand through the eyes and ears of people with sight and hearing disabilities. This session will also demonstrate the advantages of universal design for all students. Finally, you will leave this session armed with knowledge about the top accessibility challenges, plus simple solutions to solve them.
