Culinary student receives GRCC’s Arthur Andrews Award

April 22, 2016 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Secchia Institute for Culinary Arts student received Grand Rapids Community College’s Arthur Andrews Award during an April 20 reception honoring members of Delta Pi Alpha.

Nathan Westgate, who graduates with an Associate of Applied Arts-Culinary Arts degree this spring, received this year's award, which goes to the Delta Pi Alpha student with the highest cumulative GPA and the greatest number of honor points.

The award is given in memory of Andrews, who served Grand Rapids Junior College as president from 1919 to 1955. He was dedicated to the preservation, growth and academic excellence of the school that later became Grand Rapids Community College.

Tina Hoxie, associate provost and dean of student affairs said, “Grand Rapids Community College has always placed the highest value on academic integrity, and this award recognizes students’ outstanding commitment and personal investment in their academic success.”

While the Arthur Andrews Award recognizes the student with the highest GPA, being a member of Delta Pi Alpha is itself an honor. That recognition goes only to students with excellent academic achievements from the top 5 percent of the graduating class for the academic year. This year’s Delta Pi Alpha group numbers 90.

Westgate was one of 10 students recognized for having a perfect 4.0 GPA. The other students are:

Grand Rapids Community College has been offering educational opportunities in West Michigan for 100 years. Established in 1914, the college offers degree courses, certification and training programs, and workshops and personal enrichment classes. Offerings are held on GRCC’s downtown Grand Rapids campus, and at several locations throughout Kent and Ottawa counties, as well as through distance learning.
