March 24, 2015 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Community College’s Academic Testing Services office has earned national recognition.

The National College Testing Association awarded Test Center Certification to GRCC’s testing office and staff based on the excellence and integrity of its services. Only 80 centers in the United States and Canada have achieved this honor.

“Almost every GRCC student has some kind of contact with our Academic Testing Services,” said President Dr. Steven C. Ender. “This national certification is a testament to the professionalism of the staff there and the excellent service they provide — not only to our students but to area employers and the public.”

Provost Laurie Chesley agreed that the NCTA certification is a testament to the hard work of the people working at the testing center.

“I’m very proud of the staff of GRCC’s Academic Testing Services, especially Lead Proctor Gloria Thomas and Associate Director Don VanOeveren, because of their commitment to excellence,” she said. “To earn this special recognition from the National College Testing Association took a great deal of hard work and dedication, and it is a great honor for the college.”

VanOeveren pointed out that the Academic Testing Services office doesn’t serve only the GRCC campus.

“The Academic Testing Center provides testing services not only to GRCC students but also to the community at large,” he said. "We offer a variety of tests — from CLEP and Challenge exams for college credit, special proctored exams for students from other colleges, to professional certification exams for the business community.

“The Test Center Certification illustrates to our outside testing patrons that we operate under the highest accepted standards and procedures for all types of testing.”

The nonprofit National College Testing Association promotes professionalism and high-quality service in testing programs. More than 2,100 testing professionals from 615 colleges and universities are members.

Grand Rapids Community College has been offering educational opportunities in West Michigan for 100 years. Established in 1914, the college offers degree courses, certification and training programs, and workshops and personal enrichment classes. Offerings are held on GRCC’s downtown Grand Rapids campus, and at several locations throughout Kent and Ottawa counties, as well as through distance learning.
