GRCC suspending most face-to-face classes through April 3 as COVID-19 spread continues

March 11, 2020 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Community College is suspending most face-to-face classes and will begin delivering instruction through distance education on Monday, March 16, through Friday, April 3, as the spread of coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, continues.

“We are taking these proactive steps because our top priority is the health and safety of our GRCC family,” GRCC President Bill Pink said.

“We know this will be disruptive and create challenges. But we also know our students, faculty and staff understand the necessity of preventing the spread of coronavirus. We will be creative and innovative as we continue to carry out our essential mission of providing our students the education they need.”

Pink said GRCC is taking the steps after speaking with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and state authorities, who offered guidelines to higher education leaders following Tuesday’s declaration of a state of emergency.

In-person instruction will be suspended on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 12 to 14, to provide faculty the opportunity to prepare for course content to be delivered through distance learning.

Unless otherwise specified, all GRCC sites remain open and services will continue to be provided. Effective Monday, March 16, GRCC sponsored events that anticipate an attendance of more than 100 will be canceled or postponed.

The college will provide details on a GRCC website link – grcc.edu/coronavirus – that will be updated as information becomes available.

GRCC’s campus will remain open for staff and business operations will continue with appropriate measures to protect the health of our campus community.

GRCC’s leadership team is collaborating daily, focusing on preparedness and response, following guidance from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as state authorities and the Kent County Health Department.

Grand Rapids Community College offers learners of all ages opportunities to gain credits for degrees or transfer and in-demand career skills leading to rewarding careers. GRCC was established in 1914 – Michigan’s first community college -- and offers affordable classes on weekdays, evenings, Saturdays and online at locations throughout Kent and Ottawa counties.
