Nov. 11, 2019 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Community College volleyball team is headed back to the NJCAA National Tournament after convincing victories in the Great Lakes District B Tournament this weekend.
The Raiders, who won a fourth consecutive state championship earlier this month, defeated Glen Oaks Community College to head to the national tournament for the 10th time. The team finished in sixth place, last year -- the second-highest finish ever.
The Raiders, ranked 13th in the nation, topped Muskegon Community College, then beat a tough Glen Oaks squad on Friday, then again in the championship game on Saturday at St. Clair Community College in Port Huron.
The team also earned individual honors. Sophomore Danielle Johnston was named the Most Valuable Player of the district tournament after totaling 35 kills, 30 digs, 5 aces and 3 blocks.
Johnston and freshman Annie Holesinger were named to the All-Region team.
Johnston, Holesinger and sophomore Jasmine Wellet earned First Team All-Conference honors and Jamie Rozell was named to the Second Team All-Conference team.
Freshman Kylie Oberlin, sophomore Breanna Wickerink and sophomore Jamie Wellet earned Honorable Mention status. Holesinger and Rozell were named to the All-Freshman team.
Chip Will was named the District B Coach of the Year. Under Will’s direction, the Raiders have won seven MCCAA championships since 2010.
The National Tournament is held Nov. 21-23 at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, W.V.
