May 13, 2015 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Higher Learning Commission approved reaccreditation for Grand Rapids Community College, with reviewers praising GRCC’s efforts to connect students with needed support services.

“We are pleased to receive reaccreditation from the Higher Learning Commission, and it seems especially fitting to receive this recognition of our contributions to the West Michigan community during our 100-year celebration,” said President Dr. Steven C. Ender. “While the process is intense, it’s a chance for us to show off our cutting-edge programs and the incredible talent of our faculty and staff.”

The independent commission reviews degree-granting post-secondary educational institutions on such criteria as ethics, planning and teaching quality. A panel from the commission’s Academic Quality Improvement Program visited GRCC in April 2014 as part of the review process.

Panel reviewers took special note of GRCC's "strong team approach" to serving students. They also praised its efforts to provide support to different student populations, including those who plan to transfer and those attending part-time.

"Two major factors which contribute to the effective operation of an organization are the structures adopted and the quality of people involved in those structures," the reviewers said in a report. "Grand Rapids can look with pride at how well its teams operate and the achievements those teams are generating. The college is fully committed to its continual improvement and its people are making that happen in exemplary fashion."

GRCC has been accredited by the commission since 1917 and was one of the inaugural members of its AQIP program.

Grand Rapids Community College has been offering educational opportunities in West Michigan for 100 years. Established in 1914, the college offers degree courses, certification and training programs, and workshops and personal enrichment classes. Offerings are held on GRCC’s downtown Grand Rapids campus, and at several locations throughout Kent and Ottawa counties, as well as through distance learning.
