Lorena Aguayo-Márquez receives Civil Rights Award

Congratulations to Lorena Aguayo-Márquez, a recipient of the 2018 Helen Jackson Claytor Civil Rights Award!

She will receive the award tonight from the Grand Rapids Community Relations Commission. Also receiving the award is Elias Lumpkins, a former 3rd Ward city commissioner, former dean of students at Grand Rapids Junior College and current member of the GRCC Foundation board.

Aguayo-Márquez, GRCC's Kellogg community recruitment specialist, received an Excellence in Education Award and an ALAS Latinas Emerging Leader Award last year.

The Grand Rapids Community Relations Commission established the Helen Jackson Claytor Civil Rights Award in 1998. A statue of Claytor, the first African-American president of the national YWCA, stands on GRCC's Dr. Juan R. Olivarez Student Plaza.
