Volleyball player Lauren Helsen signs to Ferris

Lauren Helsen is set to continue her academic and volleyball career at Ferris State University.

During her two years at GRCC, she dished out 1,283 assists, 70 service aces and 522 digs. She led the Raiders in assists, and tied for second in service aces and digs. Her contributions led the team to a record of 32-0 in conference play, an overall record of 55-11, and the Raiders’ highest national ranking since 2014 — No. 3 in Division II of the NJCAA.

As a freshman, Helsen was named an NJCAA 1st Team Academic All-American for maintaining a perfect 4.0. During her sophomore year, she was named 1st team All-Western Conference, All-Region, and was recognized as an NJCAA 2nd Team Academic All-American, as well as being named Academic All-MCCAA, and Academic All-Western Conference. She also received GRCC’s Merle Storr Student Leadership Award for her academic and athletic achievements.

Helsen joins a strong Ferris State team that finished the 2017 season with a 24-8 record and captured the program’s fourth consecutive conference title. The Bulldogs, named GLIAC regular season and Tournament Champions, made its seventh consecutive NCAA tournament last fall.
