Success on the court, in the classroom: 18 GRCC student-athletes earn national All-Academic honors

July 2, 2019, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Eighteen Grand Rapids Community College student-athletes earned national academic honors from the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Students named to the first team have a 4.0 grade point average. Second team members have a GPA of 3.80 to 3.99, and third team members have a GPA between 3.60 and 3.79.

The volleyball team, with a 3.20 GPA, was among the 39 Michigan teams earning NJCAA All-Academic Team honors.

"We're extremely proud of our student-athletes, who have proven they are successful in the classroom and on the field of play," GRCC Athletic Director Bill Firn said. "Our coaches set high expectations, and our students recognize that. They work hard, and it shows."

Softball player Stephanie Kruskie earned All-Academic First Team honors.

Earning Second Team honors are: Brady Paganelli (baseball), Aaliyah Sargent (basketball), Trystan Thayer (cross country), Samuel Howard (golf), Autumn Severn (volleyball), Emma Pachulski (volleyball), Jamie Wellet (volleyball), and Jasmine Wellet (volleyball)

Earning Third Team honors are: C.J. Breen (baseball), Hayden Cross (baseball), Josh Nicholson (baseball), Michael Gumbko (baseball), Joel Wilson (cross country), Aaron Kietzman (softball), Ally German (volleyball), Kayla Salyer (volleyball), and Sarah Baxter (volleyball).

The volleyball team earned NJCAA All-Academic Team honors -- as well as MCCAA All-Academic Team – for the third year in a row. This award is given to programs who earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

In addition to the eighteen Raider student-athletes earning All-Academic honors, the Raiders had an astonishing 44 Academic All-Conference winners and 34 Academic All-MCCAA winners.
