Peer Mentors are students, who through their experience, knowledge and insight empower others to maximize their potential. Students who have achieved academic success and have demonstrated strong leadership and communication skills serve as Mentors. Peer Mentors provide support, encouragement, information, and guidance to Mentees in achieving their goals. Peer Mentors encourage active involvement in college activities, and organizations; serve as positive role models for Mentees, and share experiences and knowledge they have gained as students and participants in the Student Support Services (TRIO) Program at Grand Rapids Community College.
2018-2019 Peer Mentors:
My name is Monica Rivera, I'm 21 years old and am currently an International Relations major, hoping to pursue International Law in the future. I love GRCC, I have created so many amazing friendships during my time here. Being a first generation college student, I was expected to know many things and felt completely lost. Being a part of the TRIO program, I developed an amazing support system and grown in ways I didn't know was possible. I serve on the E-Board for the International Student Organization and serve as a Cultural Mentor for refugees in my community. I love traveling, learning about different cultures, reading, volunteering in my community and of course trying and eating lots of foods!
As a Peer Mentor I'm here as a support system and making sure your transition is as smooth as possible, stop by the TRIO Peer Mentor office to say Hi I would love to meet you all!
My name is Valens Tuyambaze. I’m majoring in Business Accounting and planning to transfer to Grand Valley State University. I joined TRIO last year, which made my academic school year amazing! Having joined TRIO afforded me many great opportunities such as four-year university campus visits, TRIO carnival, and many other fun/academic activities. I’m excited to announce that I am one of the TRIO Peer Mentors this academic year, which I consider being an honor to work with you. As a TRIO Peer Mentor, I am here to assist you at GRCC, and I will do my best to work with you.
You may make an appointment if you would like to meet with one of the TRIO Peer Mentors, have parking concerns, find out the many resources around campus, or feel free to stop by the TRIO office to say hi or to study. For me, the TRIO office has become a home away from home. I would like to invite you to make the TRIO office your own space as well.
I would like to welcome the new students who currently joined TRIO, and for those who are returning to the TRIO program, Welcome back! I cannot wait to meet everyone and build friendships between us.
As a GRCC student, I love being part of TRIO, but I am especially excited to take on my new role as a TRIO Peer mentor because I get to interact with you! I hope to see everybody around campus. Here’s to working together as a team so everybody can achieve his/her dream. Hope to see you soon.

Hello TRIO students! :) My name is Emily Diaz and I am one of the TRIO SSS peer mentor. This is my second year at GRCC studying to become a Physician Assistant, and I will be transferring to GVSU in the fall of 2020. I have been involved in the Campus Activity Board (CAB) and have volunteered for many events. CAB has helped me to stay motivated and become a more confident student with great leadership skills. If you are interested in becoming more involved with the school, I know a great person to talk with.
In addition, I am very familiar with GRCC’s resources that are offered, as well as opportunities on and off campus. I am here to help answer any of the questions that might get overlooked, such as: loading money in your raider card, parking ramp, campus locations, renting out a book from the bookstore/library, and etc. I am extremely excited to share with you the opportunities that TRIO SSS has to offer here at GRCC. Therefore, it will be my pleasure to speak to you about how TRIO has a huge advantage to your education.
