Applied Music, Principal

Take Concurrently With MU 105, Interpretation
Applied Music is the sequence of private study on the student's principal instrument/voice. MU 151, MU 152, MU 251 and MU 252 correspond to the four semesters of study during the first two years of college. Each student must complete thirteen one hour lessons, beginning the second week of the semester, and perform three times during MU 105 Interpretation. Students failing to complete these requirements will not advance to the next level of Applied Music. Students will pay an Applied Music Fee of $350 in addition to the cost of the credits for Applied Music. At the end of each semester the student will perform a jury exam on the principal instrument/voice demonstrating their progress, the MU 152 exam will be performed in front of the entire music faculty. (See Applied Music Policy II, D) All four semesters of applied music principal must be completed for the AM degree.
Note: Non-music majors should register for MU 143. This section of Applied Music does not require a jury and mandatory MU 105 is waived.

This applied music area is for students who wish to study an instrument/voice for their own musical enjoyment and musical development, or as a substitute for piano class. Students studying MU 111, MU 112, MU 121, MU 122, MU 221, MU 222, MU 141 and MU 142, must complete thirteen one-half hour lessons, beginning the second week of the semester, and perform three times during MU 105 Interpretation, students failing to complete these requirements will not advance to the next level of Applied Music. Students will pay an Applied Music Fee of $175 in addition to the cost of the credit for Applied Music. At the end of each semester the student will perform a jury exam demonstrating their progress. No credits in applied secondary are required for the AM degree.
Note: Non-music majors should register for MU 111. This section of Applied Music does not require a jury and mandatory MU 105 is waived.
Interpretation
Interpretation, MU 105, is an individual performance class which must be taken concurrently with any Applied Music class. Interpretation class is divided into four areas: instrumental, vocal, piano, and guitar. Each member of the class will be expected to perform in class on the instrument/voice which is taken for study in the Applied Music program. The class will discuss practice routines and habits, technical and stylistic problems, musical memorization, and pedagogical concerns.
Applied Music Policy
- Student Information And Responsibility
- The student may only study with those applied music instructors that have been officially approved and listed by the music department.
- Lesson appointments are to be made between the student and the instructor for a mutually agreeable time.
- Students are to be prompt and regular in the keeping of lesson appointments. If the student must miss a lesson for a legitimate reason, he/she is obligated to give the instructor twenty-four hours advanced notification.
- Lessons missed by the student are to be made up at the convenience of the instructor. Agreement on the time of the make-up lessons must be made within the week of the missed lesson
- Instructor Information
- MU 105 is a required course for all students studying privately for credit. This is a course in performance and is specifically designed for students in the applied music program. The instructor is encouraged to attend when his/her students perform.
- The instructor is encouraged to report student progress to the music faculty member in charge of the Interpretation section in which the student is enrolled.
- Lessons missed by the instructor are to be made up at the convenience of the student and agreed to within the week of the lesson missed.
- All students are to have 13 lessons each semester. Major (MU 143, MU 151, MU 152, MU 161 and MU 162) study requires an hour lesson each week and two hours of practice/applied study each day. Minor (MU 111, MU 112, MU 113, MU 121, MU 122, MU 131, MU 132, MU 141 and MU 142) study requires a half hour lesson each week and one hour of practice/applied study each day.
- The applied instructor will pick literature for study during each semester which is appropriate to the applied music level in which the student is enrolled.
- Performance
- All applied music students must be enrolled in Interpretation class concurrently and are required to perform in the class during the semester. The number of performances will be determined by the Interpretation class instructor.
- Literature performed in class must be material the student is currently studying in private lessons.
- All instrumentalists and vocalists must engage the services of our staff accompanist if the piece calls for one. No less then two rehearsals with the accompanist prior to the performance should be considered mandatory for an adequate performance.
- Jury Exams
- Jury exams are held at the end of each semester. The instructor must participate in the jury exam to recommend a grade and next applied music level for the student.
- Jury exams for MU 151, 161 and 162 are performed for the faculty from that applied area. (If the student is enrolled in MU 162 a sophomore recital may be performed in lieu of a jury exam.
- If the student is enrolled in MU 152, a Freshman Hearing will be performed in the place of the jury exam. The Freshman Hearing will determine whether the student is ready to be placed at sophomore standing. This exam is performed for the entire faculty. If after 2 attempts, a student does not pass the 152 jury, it is advisable that the student consult with the applied instructor and music department head to assess the potential for success as a music major.
