About Me
Hi! I am Cassandra, but everyone calls me Cassie. I am here to help you figure out college — whether that means planning your classes, choosing a major, or simply answer the question, "Am I doing this right?" (Spoiler: you probably are.).
I started out wanting to be a teacher, which took me to Grand Valley State University for a degree in Special Education and a Master's in Education. I'm certified in Elementary Education with endorsements in Early Childhood Education and Emotional Impairments, which basically means I'm really good at explaining things in different ways until they make sense.
While working on campus at GVSU, I realized higher education was my thing. Since then, I've been an academic advisor at Wayne State University and GVSU, and I spent over a decade helping future educators make it through college and into the classroom. Somewhere along the way I discovered advising is teaching, just without pop quizzes and with way more real-life decision making.
I'm so excited to be at GRCC (Go Raiders and shout out to our new Otter, the real MVP). I believe advising should feel supportive, clear, and low-stress — think helpful guide, not gatekeeper. My goal is for you to leave our meetings feeling confident, informed, and not panicking about your degree plan.
When I am not advising, I'm spending time with my family and my three teenage daughters. Fun fact: they've taught me that snacks (or Starbucks) solve most problems — which honestly feels very on-brand for an Otter-led campus.
