Maintaining eligibility

To maintain eligibility you must:

  • Continue to be a Michigan resident.
  • Maintain a 2.0 grade point average in the courses you take towards your associate degree or certificate as a Michigan Reconnect student.
  • Submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually.
  • If you have experienced a circumstance that impacted your ability to meet the above continuous enrollment requirement, please review the appeal form and process:  Futures for Frontliners and Reconnect Continuous Enrollment Appeal Form. Appeals should be submitted no more than one semester prior to your return.
  • Additional, for renewal of the scholarship, a Reconnect participant must annually:
  •  File the FAFSA and complete verification process (as needed). See Student Eligibility.
  • The student must list the Reconnect eligible institution community college as their first school on the FAFSA for the student to reflect on the MiSSG roster each year.
  • Maintain Michigan residency. See Student Eligibility.
  • Maintain enrollment in their program of study and earn at least 12 credits in their program of study by the end of an academic year, unless a scholarship leave of absence has been approved. Participants will be evaluated on this criterion once they have begun an academic year.
  • New participants who start on a Fall semester must meet this criterion by the end of the academic year.
  • New participants who start on a Winter/Spring or Summer semester must meet this criterion by the end of the following academic year.
  • If the student does not earn at least 12 credits by the end of the academic year, the institution must report this in MiSSG.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress (SAP), as defined by the institution, or a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 at the institution since becoming a Reconnect participant.
  • If the institution is calculating the student’s cumulative minimum 2.0 GPA, grades earned prior to the student’s participation in Reconnect are not to be considered in the calculation.
  • If the student does not meet SAP and the required GPA minimum, this must be reported in MiSSG as 'SAP and GPA Not Met' and the student will no longer be eligible to continue with the scholarship program.
