Learning Disabilities:

  • You may notice students having difficulty with:
    • Oral and/or written expression
    • Reading comprehension and basic reading decoding skills
    • Problem solving skills
    • Ability to listen selectively during lectures
    • Mathematical calculation and reasoning
    • Interpreting social cues
    • Memory, sequencing and organization
  • Considerations for Instruction:
    • Use organized, structured course schedules
    • Preview your lecture, explain how it relates to the previous lesson, and explain why it is important for the course objectives
    • Post class notes before or after class
    • Use Camtasia to record your lectures and make them available to students if needed (captioning would be required for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students)
    • Present material in a variety of ways, not only through lecture
    • Use visual aids, hands on materials, videos, lectures, computer assignments to enhance learning
  • Reasonable Accommodations May Include:
    • Textbooks in electronic format that can be read aloud
    • Copies of classmate’s or instructor’s notes or Power Point presentations
    • Audio-recording lectures
    • Use of lap top for note taking or note management
    • Extended time for tests
    • Reduced distraction testing environment
    • Breaks allowed during tests or the ability to test in chunks/sections
    • Use of computer to type out essay, short answer
    • Calculator, spell-checker, spelling to not count against grade, reader, or scribe for tests
