The Program Assistant will provide direct support to the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Department at the Grand Rapids Housing Commission (GRHC). This role is designed for students interested in gaining real-world experience in public service, housing programs, case support, and customer service in a professional setting.
They will assist in serving low-income families and individuals participating in the HCV (Section 8) Program by supporting staff with documentation, data entry, customer service, communication, and general program administration. This opportunity offers valuable exposure to housing policy, public administration, and service delivery for vulnerable populations.

• Provide administrative support to HCV staff by preparing files, scanning and organizing participant documents, and entering data into housing software systems.
• Assist in responding to inquiries from program participants via phone, email, or in-person under staff supervision.
• Help prepare mailings and notices related to reexaminations, inspections, rent adjustments, and other program activities.
• Support staff in reviewing and organizing housing assistance files for quality assurance and compliance.
• Assist with appointment scheduling, document tracking, and other follow-up needed to help participants maintain program eligibility.
• Create or update outreach materials, flyers, and informational handouts for program participants and landlords.
• Attend HCV team meetings and training opportunities to build knowledge of housing policies and services.
• Help maintain program logs, reports, and file databases in a confidential and secure manner.
• Shadow HCV Coordinators, Intake Specialists, Inspectors, and the Landlord Liaison to gain an understanding of department functions and workflows.

• Currently enrolled at GRCC with Federal Work-Study eligibility
• Interest in public service, affordable housing, human services, or public administration
• Excellent customer service and communication skills
• Cultural sensitivity and ability to work respectfully with diverse populations
• Strong organizational and time-management abilities
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Ability to handle confidential information appropriately; confidentiality and professionalism are required at all times
• Willingness to learn and contribute to a team-oriented environment
