More adults across West Michigan now have an opportunity to attend Grand Rapids Community College tuition-free through Michigan Reconnect.
The state recently expanded eligibility for the program to Michigan residents ages 21 and older who do not already have a college degree, lowering the previous eligibility age of 25. The change means more adults can use Michigan Reconnect to begin their education at GRCC or return to college to finish what they started.
For GRCC, the expansion is especially significant because adult learners are an important part of the college community. Michigan Reconnect provides another pathway for students who may have delayed college because of cost, work, family responsibilities or other circumstances to pursue an associate degree or skills certificate.
Reconnect Graduates Earn More
Eligible students attending their local community college can enroll tuition-free through Michigan Reconnect. Students attending an out-of-district community college can receive substantial tuition assistance.
And, new research released by the state shows that the value of Reconnect can extend well beyond the cost of tuition.
According to the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics, the median wage among Reconnect graduates increased by $13,400 one year after graduation compared with their wages before participating in the program. By the second year after graduation, the median increase reached $16,300, a 48-percent increase over pre-Reconnect wages.
The research also found that Reconnect graduates earned a median of $16,500 more one year after graduation than similar workers with a high school diploma.
“One year after graduation, our research shows that the median wage among Reconnectors increased $13,400 compared with pre-Reconnect wages,” Scott Powell, chief data officer for the State of Michigan and director of MCDA, said in the state’s news release. “By year two, the group’s median wage increased to $16,300 higher than pre-Reconnect wages, representing an overall increase of 48 percent.”
Expanding Access to High-Quality Education
For GRCC students, those findings reinforce the potential long-term value of completing a college credential. Students can use Michigan Reconnect at GRCC to prepare for an in-demand career, gain skills that can help them advance in their current field or build an affordable pathway toward additional education.
Michigan Reconnect was launched in 2021 to help adults without a college degree enroll in or return to college for little to no cost. According to the state, more than 250,000 Michiganders have applied for Reconnect since the program launched, and nearly 20,000 have graduated.
The newly eligible age group has demonstrated strong interest in the program. Michigan temporarily expanded Reconnect to adults ages 21–24 in the past. During that period, which ended in December 2024, nearly 35,000 adults in the age group applied for the scholarship and more than 18,600 enrolled at a Michigan community or Tribal college, according to the state’s announcement.
The latest expansion is made possible through a $25 million ongoing investment included in the state’s bipartisan Fiscal Year 2027 education budget.
Support, Every Step of the Way
Reconnect students also have access to support as they navigate college. Michigan Reconnect Navigators provide free, one-on-one assistance with financial aid, career goals, selecting a program of study and other steps toward completing a credential according to the state.
At GRCC, the expanded eligibility creates another opportunity to reach adults who may have thought college was financially out of reach, including those who previously started but did not complete a degree.
