GRCC gave Nathan VerStrat the freedom to try new things, make new friends and change his mind.
VerStrat had an early start at GRCC, taking three courses here while he was homeschooled as a high school student. After graduating, he decided to continue at GRCC because he wanted more experience in the college environment.
He was encouraged to enroll in GRCC’s Honors Program, where he found friends and support.
“I have accomplished more than I believed possible in two years of college,” he said. “I have been acknowledged on the President’s List and the Dean’s List, and I have been given the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities.”
Being open-minded about his new environment paid off with his very first class: English 100 with Tom Mulder.
“Professor Mulder completely changed my philosophy on writing,” VerStrat said. “I was transformed from a student who hated the subject into someone who now works as an English tutor and loves writing!”
“Purposeful and introspective, Nate was an achiever in our English 100 class,” Mulder said. “He contributed insightful writings, thoughtful discussions and unobtrusive leadership in our Monday evening classes.”
VerStrat graduated this spring with an Associate of Arts. He plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in either collaborative design or computer science and then a master’s in architecture.
“Part of the beauty of a community college for me has been the freedom offered to change pathways and majors without significant financial repercussions!” he said.
