Be There Training and Certification

"Be There" Training and Certification

"Be There" Training and Certification

Free Ā· 3 hours Ā· Jack.org Certification you can put on your resume.

Someone you know is probably struggling right now. Would you know what to say?

Be There is a certification program developed by Jack.org (a Canadian nonprofit focused on youth mental health) that teaches five simple, evidence-based ways to support someone who's struggling before things reach a crisis point. This training does not replace clinical training or crisis intervention; it trains peers to respond to those around them with support skills that can make a real difference for a roommate, classmate, or friend having a rough week, semester, or year.

During the session, we'll work through Be There's "5 Golden Rules" together by watching short videos and pausing for real discussion after each one, so it's less lecture and more shared conversation. A licensed clinician will drop in for additional questions so that you feel confident to navigate hard conversations. You'll leave with a certification through Jack.org and tools you can actually use the next time someone in your life needs you to show up.

More than a feel-good afternoon—this one's resume-worthy. Employers across every field increasingly look for interpersonal and mental-health-literacy skills, and Be There is a named, verifiable credential you can list directly on a resume or LinkedIn under certifications. Whether you're headed into healthcare, education, business, or basically anything involving other humans, being able to point to concrete training in supportive communication is a real differentiator—not just a nice thing to have done!

This training doesn't just live in one corner of Flourish — it activates all Four R's.

  • Rooted: Be There starts with grounding yourself before you can support anyone else. The training opens by helping you recognize your own capacity and limits, so you're showing up steady, not stretched thin. By teaching actionable skills and affirming scripts, the goal is to have you feeling anchored in their own confidence.
  • Reaching Out: This is the heart of it. Be There gives you the actual language and confidence to check in on someone struggling, and to know what to say when a friend reaches out to you first.
  • Resilient: You'll walk away with a repeatable skill set—not a one-time fix—that you can lean on again and again as situations come up throughout the semester and beyond. One of the key goals of developing resiliency is to recognize when we or others are in hardship and to have tools to meet that challenge head on.
  • Radiating: Every person who gets certified becomes someone else in the GRCC community who can show up for a friend, a classmate, a roommate—the impact doesn't stop with you, it spreads outward!

This training is hosted through Flourish, GRCC's peer-led student wellness initiative, in partnership with the Center for Counseling and Well-Being (CCWB).

From Wednesday, November 18, 2026 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM EST at Cook 527.
