Jonathan Marshall

Jonathan Marshall is honored to serve as the Interim Associate Dean for the School of Liberal Arts at Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC). A proud GRCC alumnus, he transferred to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Grand Valley State University and a Master of Music in Guitar Performance from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.

Jonathan has been a faculty member of the GRCC Music Department since 2009 and served as a faculty union representative for six years. In 2022, he was appointed Assistant Professor and Director of Guitar Studies at GRCC. He is an accomplished performer, with appearances both nationally and internationally, and a published composer with numerous works featured through Guitar Chamber Music Press. Before joining GRCC, he spent a year teaching middle school English in Seoul, South Korea, and in the summer of 2012, he taught guitar in Jiangsu, China.

As a professor, Jonathan teaches applied guitar in both jazz and classical styles, as well as music theory and music appreciation. He conducts two guitar ensembles, including the GRCC Community Guitar Ensemble, which he founded, and also directs the GRCC International Guitar Series.

Outside of GRCC, Jonathan actively performs classical guitar throughout Michigan, owns and operates Jonathan Marshall Guitars (a classical guitar dealership), enjoys metal detecting along the beaches of Lake Michigan, and—most importantly—is a devoted husband and father.
