Dr. Nikki Smith is a distinguished scholar and a dynamic force in criminal justice and mental health. With a rich background in field research, she has delved deeply into the lives of juveniles entangled in the criminal justice system, explored the complexities of adult corrections, and addressed critical mental health issues. Currently, her research shines a spotlight on the unique challenges faced by middle-class African American women and their reluctance to seek mental health treatment.

Dr. Smith's commitment to shaping future leaders and advocates is evident in her role as a tenured professor at Grand Rapids Community College in the School of Criminal Justice/Social Justice. Her influence extends beyond the college classroom as the Midwest Regional Counselor of the Community College section for the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, where she helps to shape policy and practice on a broader scale. Additionally, she is a licensed clinician in Michigan, providing expert care and support to those in need.
