Pre-Optometry, A.A. (Ferris State University)

Optometrists are the frontline of eye and vision care in the U.S. They conduct eye exams, diagnose and treat vision problems and prescribe corrective lenses. As an optometrist, your day will involve seeing patients for routine eye exams, prescribing glasses and contact lenses, treating diseases and providing pre- and post-operative care to patients undergoing ophthalmologic surgery. 

The pre-optometry program courses focus on biology, chemistry, human anatomy and physiology and physics. After completing your associate degree at GRCC, you’ll be prepared to take the Optometry Admission Test (OAT) and apply to the Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) program at Ferris State University.

How long does it take to get a pre-optometry degree?

Most students will complete this degree in 2.5 or 3 years. How quickly you finish your degree will depend on how many classes you take per semester.

What can you do with a pre-optometry degree?

A pre-optometry degree from GRCC prepares you to take the Optometry Admission Test (OAT) and apply to the Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) program at the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University. The program includes clinical training, externship opportunities and residency programs.

After graduating from the Michigan College of Optometry and obtaining the required state licensing you will be ready to start practicing as a Doctor of Optometry, either in a private or group practice or in a hospital setting.
