A Message to Parents and Families
Congratulations on helping your student reach college! Your support is still essential, but your role is shifting. Instead of managing the process for them, you are now coaching them behind the scenes while they take personal responsibility.
Transitioning to college is a big step, and it is normal to have questions about how disability support works at GRCC. We are here to partner with your student as they build independence and take charge of their education.
How College Support Works
- Student-Led Process: In college, students lead the way. Your student needs to contact Disability Support Services (DSS) and request their own accommodations.
- Privacy Laws (FERPA): Federal privacy laws protect your student's personal information. GRCC can only discuss student details with parents if the student completes a FERPA consent form. Learn more at www.grcc.edu/privacy.
- Focus on Self-Advocacy: Learning to explain their needs and ask for support now builds confidence for college, future jobs, and life beyond school.
How You Can Help
- Explore the DSS Website Together: Review how college accommodations differ from high school services.
- Practice Self-Advocacy: Help your student practice explaining their diagnosis and what support helps them best.
- Check Paperwork: Make sure your student's disability documentation is updated and complete.
- Connect Early: Prompt your student to contact DSS right after admission so support is in place before classes start.
- Encourage Direct Communication: Ask your student to reach out to DSS directly whenever they have questions.
