Hi, I’m Katie Hughes, faculty advisor at Grand Rapids Community College. I work with all GRCC students, and I also have specialized experience supporting:
- ESL and international students
- Honors students
- Study Away participants
- Transfer Bridges students (U of M partnership)
I began my own college journey as a first-generation student, starting at a community college (NMC) before transferring to Western Michigan University. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Psychology & Social Work at WMU, followed by a Master’s Degree in Counseling in Higher Education. I’m also a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Michigan.
Over the years, I’ve worked in roles across higher education and counseling, including:
- International admissions & programming
- TRIO programs (student support services)
- Career Services and Disability/Occupational Support Services
- Counseling and Academic Advising & Transfer
- Teaching at WMU and GRCC
At GRCC, I also serve as Faculty Advisor for the International Student Organization through Student Life.
Outside of work, I love to travel (I studied abroad during college and stay connected with friends around the world). I also enjoy gardening, being outdoors, and spending time with my Family and pets.

I offer both virtual and in-person advising appointments.
