The Three Finalists

During the first phase of creating our future mascot, we asked for your ideas. After hundreds of creative submissions with tons of GRCC spirit, we narrowed it down to three finalists for our future Raider mascot.

Otter

Why it made the cut: Many mascot submissions were inspired by the Grand River — otters popped up again and again. Names like “River Otter” and “River Raider” were suggested to represent GRCC’s location and energy.

Why it fits a Raider: Otters are curious, clever and quick, just like GRCC students. They adapt to change, face challenges with grit and explore new paths with a playful and determined spirit. Our kind of Raider!

Potential challenge: None! So far, this one’s wide open.

Lion

Why it made the cut: Lions were a favorite across the board, with just over 10% of entries suggesting one, from pirate lions to Viking lions. Roaring support!

Why it fits a Raider: There’s already lion energy on campus from the Lion Fountain to Lyon Street. Lions are bold, brave and move proudly. That sense of strength and community? Very GRCC.

Potential challenge: Macomb Community College Monarchs use a lion for their athletics.

Fox

Why it made the cut: Many mascot submissions featured Michigan wildlife, think squirrels, deer, wolves. But foxes led the pack!

Why it fits a Raider: Foxes are smart, agile and adaptable, just like our students. They navigate obstacles with style and strategy. Quick thinkers. Creative problem-solvers. Total Raiders.

Potential challenge: None! So far, this one’s wide open, too.
