The Public Works Academy at Grand Rapids Community College is a pioneering 14-week program that combines classroom instruction with paid, hands-on internships through local municipalities. Designed for recent high school graduates, career changers and those passionate about public service, this program offers a comprehensive pathway into the public works sector.

GRCC’s Public Works Academy is one of the first programs of its kind. It offers:

Program overview

  • Anticipated start date: February 2026
  • Duration: 14 weeks
  • Structure: Blended learning with in-person classes and paid internships
  • Partners: City of Grand Rapids, City of Kentwood, City of Wyoming, City of East Grand Rapids, City of Norton Shores, City of Grand Haven, HRC, Rowe Professional Services and HNTB
  • Compensation: Wages vary by municipal employer. Individuals will be compensated for hours worked with their assigned employer.

  • Construction site safety
  • Construction mathematics
  • Use of hand and power tools

What is the Public Works Academy?

The Public Works Academy is a 14-week program that prepares students for careers in the public works sector. It combines classroom instruction with paid, hands-on internships through local municipalities to create a comprehensive pathway to in-demand jobs.

Who can apply to the program?

To apply you must be 18 years or older, have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record and no recent DUI offenses. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, but not required.

No prior experience is necessary and individuals from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Applications will open December 2025.

How long does the program take to complete?

The program is 14 weeks. The anticipated start date is February 2026.

What does the training involve?

The coursework is a mix of classroom learning and paid work opportunities with local municipalities. You will also earn your West Michigan Green Infrastructure certification, OSHA-10 certification and prepare for the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) exam.

Is the coursework in-person or online?

The coursework will be in-person and take place at Leslie E. Tassell MTEC, 622 Godfrey SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.

Will I get paid for my working hours?

Yes, you will be paid for the hours you work with each municipality. Each municipality will set its own wage.

What support services are available?

GRCC is here to support your journey. We offer:

  • Academic support, tutoring and regular check-ins
  • Resource referrals for transportation, child care and more

What happens after I complete the program?

After completing the program, you will have the foundational skills to start a career in public works. You will also have your West Michigan Green Infrastructure certification, OSHA-10 certification and be prepared to take the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) exam.

Can I continue my education after the program?

Yes! Participants may continue their education by gaining additional skills sets or certifications such as stormwater certification, fleet management professional certification, public infrastructure inspector certification and public works professional supervision certification. The Public Works Academy may also be a stepping stone toward the water to the Water to Work Internship Program, which provides hands-on training and paid internships in the public water industry.
