ESL Classes

GRCC offers English as a second language (ESL) classes in Grand Rapids. Our skilled and caring staff will help you learn to speak comfortably and gain confidence with the language.

We offer three ESL options: 

The right option for you will depend on your goals.

Adult Education ESL

Adult Education ESL

GRCC’s Adult Education ESL classes help English language learners become comfortable communicating with their native-English peers in real-life work, community, academic and social situations.

GRCC’s Adult Education ESL program might be right for you if:

  • You are at least 18 years old.
  • You are interested in career coaching and resources.
  • You are re-entering the workforce or starting over.
  • You are interested in the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC).
  • You want to better communicate with your kids’ teachers and other people in your community.
  • You are interested in weekday classes virtually through Zoom and hybrid during the weekends. Technology and internet access are required to participate in this program. 

Sign Up for Adult Education ESL

If you’d like to sign up for the Adult Education ESL program, your next steps are to: 

  1. Fill out the Adult Education interest form to be placed in the call list for the next semesters.
  2. Take CASAS pre-tests and pay the $5 non-refundable, testing fee.
  3. Meet with the testing proctor immediately after the test to review scores and discuss placement.
  4. If you are eligible to enroll for Adult Education ESL classes, pay the $25, non-refundable or class registration fee each semester. 

Academic ESL

Academic ESL

GRCC’s Academic ESL programs are a great option if you are planning to continue your education and build skills for a career.

GRCC’s Academic ESL program might be right for you if:

  • You are planning to attend college or take academic courses and need to improve your English first.
  • You want to build skills for success in higher education or a professional career.
  • You are looking for a structured, multi-level ESL program that matches your current skill level.
  • Taking one to three ESL classes for academic credit each semester will fit your schedule.

Sign Up for Academic ESL

To enroll in Academic ESL courses follow these steps:

  1. Apply to GRCC.
  2. Take the Levels of English Proficiency (LOEP) assessment. This test includes reading, listening, grammar and writing. Walk-in testing is available weekdays on Main Campus and Lakeshore Campus.
  3. Meet with an academic advisor. 
  4. Register for classes. You cannot register for academic ESL courses on your own. An advisor will assist you by registering you for any necessary courses.
  5. Pay your tuition and fees. Academic ESL courses are eligible for financial aid. Students are required to pay their tuition before classes begin, whether through financial aid, student loans, a payment plan, or another form of payment.

GRCC’s Workforce Training offers short-term training opportunities to quickly build the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in the competitive job market.

Whether you're looking to start a new career, enhance your skills or simply explore new opportunities, we offer a wide range of short-term training options, 18-22 week job training programs and customized training to meet your needs.
