What is TRIO?
TRIO programs are federally funded programs dedicated to first-generation and low income learners, meant to promote opportunity in underserved socioeconomic subgroups. There are seven different programs under TRIO; GRCC currently has three!
How is TRIO EOC different from other TRIO programs at GRCC?
While all of TRIO serves first-generation and low income students, the EOC focuses on 19+ adult learners, helping them start their GED and the college admissions process. GRCC’s other TRIO departments begin their support once a student has enrolled in classes, focusing on retention and academic support.
Do I have to attend GRCC to get help from TRIO EOC?
No, you don’t have to attend Grand Rapids Community College to receive help from TRIO EOC. We help students with enrolling at the school of their choice, whether that’s a community college, university, trade school, or adult education school.
Is there a cost to receiving TRIO EOC services?
Not at all. All services from TRIO EOC are completely free to eligible participants.
Is TRIO EOC only for first-time college students or can returning adults join too?
TRIO EOC is available to both first-time college students and returning adults. In fact, returning adults are a common group we serve. We assist individuals regardless of where they are in their educational journey, whether they are just starting or returning after time away.
Do I have to be enrolled in classes to receive services?
No, you don’t need to be enrolled in classes to receive services. TRIO EOC can assist individuals at whatever step they are in, from exploring their options and applying to college, to completing the admissions process and preparing to enroll in classes.
Can TRIO EOC help me prepare for college after I complete my GED?
Yes. We encourage GED participants to start working with our navigator to discuss their college plan and start the process early. After completing the GED, the participants are prepared to transition into college, with TRIO EOC assisting them in finalizing financial aid and enrollment details.
Can TRIO EOC provide assistance beyond academic and career planning?
Yes, TRIO EOC also helps individuals access basic needs and resources available in the community. They connect participants to community organizations for help with food and housing insecurity, mental health care, employment opportunities, and language interpretation/cultural services.
Can TRIO EOC help me choose classes?
After you meet with an academic advisor at your college who provides you with a list of required courses, TRIO EOC can assist you in enrolling in the classes. However, we cannot determine which courses you need for your program as TRIO EOC does not have an academic advisor.
Do I have to be low-income or first-generation to apply to TRIO EOC?
While many TRIO EOC participants are low income, first generation students, you do not need to meet this criteria to receive services. There are other eligibility requirements an individual can meet. Please contact us if you are unsure if you’re eligible!
Can current students receive TRIO EOC services?
