GRCC Adds Its First Electric Vehicle to the Fleet

Grand Rapids Community College is taking another step toward a more sustainable future with the arrival of our first electric vehicle (EV) in June 2025. The Ford F-150 Lightning  will be used by the Facilities carpenters for campus projects and material pick-ups around Grand Rapids, reducing emissions while supporting day-to-day operations.

What is an Electric Vehicle?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are powered by one or more electric motors that draw energy from a rechargeable battery pack.  They do not use gasoline or oil.

Why it Matters

  • Lower emissions: Over its lifetime, an EV produces significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions than a traditional gas-powered vehicle, even when factoring in battery production.
  • Smaller carbon footprint: GRCC purchases 13% of its electricity from renewable sources, further reducing the environmental impact of using electricity for transportation.
  • Fuel savings: Charging an EV costs less per mile than fueling with gasoline, saving the college money over time.
  • Reduced Maintenance: With fewer moving parts and no need for oil changes, spark plugs or fuel filters, EVs require less maintenance and operate more efficiently.
