Grand Rapids Community College is making progress on its sustainability goals by installing a frequency drive on the chiller in Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall (RJF). This upgrade improves the efficiency of the building’s HVAC system — saving an estimated 200,000 kWh of electricity and $20,000 per year.
What’s a Frequency Drive?
Also known as a variable frequency drive (VFD), this device controls how fast a motor runs by adjusting the power it receives. This means motors only use the energy they need — saving power, reducing wear and supporting the environment.
Why It Matters
- Saves Energy: Cuts electricity use in fans, pumps and chillers.
- Lowers Costs: Reduces utility bills and maintenance needs.
- Supports Sustainability: Helps lower GRCC’s carbon footprint.
- Extends Equipment Life: Reduces strain on motors and parts.
This small change is part of a larger commitment to sustainability, benefiting both GRCC and the wider community.
