Sustainable Transportation at GRCC

Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) is committed to promoting sustainable transportation options that help reduce emissions and make  commuting more affordable and accessible. Through various partnerships and initiatives, we offer a range of options to support our students and employees in getting to campus in an environmentally-friendly way.

Ride the Rapid Partnership: Free Bus Passes

Implemented in August 2024, GRCC has partnered with  The Rapid to provide a free, all-access transit pass for active students and employees. This one-year pilot program offers unlimited rides on The Rapid's 28 fixed routes and 2 BRIT lines, helping reduce transportation costs and eliminate barriers to education.

Each student will receive a Wave card every semester, while employees will get a card valid for up to 12 months.

Bike Racks and Repair Stations

For those who prefer to bike to campus, GRCC offers convenient bike racks located near every building, providing ample space to securely park your bike. Additionally, we’ve placed two bike repair stands and air pumps on the Main campus — one in front of the Learning Resource Center (LRC) and one near Sneden Hall. There are also  repair stands at MTEC and and the Lakeshore Campus, ensuring cyclists have the tools they need to maintain their bikes while on campus.

Electric Vehicles

GRCC continues to invest in sustainability with the addition of our first electric vehicle (EV) in 2025. This EV is used by our Facilities skilled trades crew to navigate campus, complete projects and pick up materials from vendors, contributing to a cleaner, greener campus.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

We’re making it easier for faculty, staff and students to drive electric by providing EV charging stations on campus. Two electric vehicle charging stations are located in Ramp A — one near the Fountain Street entrance for faculty and staff, the other  near the Bostwick entrance for students. See Parking-Transportation for more information. Additional charging stations are available at the Lakeshore Campus and  Tassel MTEC.

West Michigan Rideshare Program

GRCC has partnered with The Rapid to offer the West Michigan Rideshare Program, a service that connects you to other GRCC students in nearby areas to share rides.  This program helps you save money on gas, reduce your carbon footprint and make commuting more efficient! It’s a great way to build community while supporting environmental sustainability.
