Students wishing to enroll in applied voice lessons should plan to audition. Students wishing to pursue a degree in music with voice as their primary emphasis may prepare using the listed items below. These requirements are suggestions. You may choose to perform any pieces/scales that you feel demonstrates your best musical ability, and you will be placed in the appropriate level of applied study.
If you have any questions about voice auditions or want to schedule a prospective student lesson, contact Dr. Andrew Martin at andrewmartin6@grcc.edu.
In a voice audition, we recommend a performance of three works as a placement assessment:
- An English language art song or aria written after 1900.
- A foreign language art song or aria.
- One additional art song or aria of your choice, or a musical theatre/jazz selection of your choice.
If you have a limited repertoire of vocal literature, two contrasting works of any genres will be acceptable. Works do not have to be memorized, though performance from memory is highly preferred. Please send a pdf of your sheet music for our accompanist a week before your audition or bring a backing track for your music.
