The Introduction to Construction program focuses on the fundamental skills needed for entry-level work in construction, remodeling, restoration, maintenance and general building trades. Students who complete this program are prepared to work safely, use common hand and power tools, follow construction prints and supervisor direction, and complete hands-on building and jobsite tasks under supervision or as part of a construction crew.

Graduates of this program are prepared for entry-level employment in roles such as general construction laborer, excavation laborer, construction helper/worker, remodeling assistant, restoration laborer, maintenance-support laborer and other construction support positions.

Skills and Learning Outcomes

What Skills Do You Need Prior to Training?

The student should demonstrate reading and math skills. One should also possess the ability to work with others. Good hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity are also recommended.

What Skills Will You Learn While in Training?

  • Framing walls, ceilings, floors and roofs
  • Building stairs and small structures such as sheds
  • Installing drywall and related interior materials
  • Assisting with roofing applications
  • Performing basic concrete tasks
  • Completing basic residential electrical and plumbing tasks
  • Measuring, laying out and assembling common residential construction components
  • Supporting remodeling, repair and general labor operations on residential jobsites
