Earn your Law Enforcement A.A.A.S. degree and Police Academy Certificate through a flexible pre-service program designed to prepare you for licensure as a Michigan Police Officer.
Applicants must complete all prerequisite courses prior to starting the academy. The track police academy program is open to all qualified students regardless of degree background or financial aid needs.

Prerequisite Requirements
Before being admitted to the Police Academy, students must complete the following nine prerequisite courses outlined in the college catalog.
General Education Courses
- EN 101 ā English Composition I
- COM 131 ā Fundamentals of Public Speaking or COM 135 ā Interpersonal Communication
- Humanities Elective (minimum 3 credit hours)
- Social Sciences Elective (minimum 3 credit hours)
- Natural Science or Mathematics Elective (minimum 3 credit hours)
Criminal Justice Program Courses
- CJ 110 ā Introduction to Criminal Justice
- CJ 111 ā Criminology
- CJ 122 ā Spanish for Criminal Justice
- CJ 164 ā Police Academy Boot Camp*
*CJ 164 Police Academy Boot Camp is offered only during the summer semester and must be completed during the summer immediately preceding the fall Police Academy for which you are applying. Other prerequisite courses may be taken concurrently with Boot Camp.
Academy Admission Process
Admission to the Police Academy is highly competitive. Applicants should ensure that all requested information is disclosed accurately and completely throughout the application process.
- Submit an Application: Once you are on track to complete your prerequisite courses and enrolled into CJ 164 Boot Camp, students will be emailed the Police Academy application.
- Screening: Applicants who successfully pass the initial screening process will be invited to participate in an interview.
- Academy Admission: Students selected for admission will begin the Police Academy in August.
Academy Schedule
The Police Academy spans two semesters and runs from late August through late April.
Training Schedule
- Fall Semester through Winter Semester
- Primarily weekday instruction
- Occasional weekend training sessions for:
- Firearms
- Emergency Vehicle Operations (Driving)
- Tactical First Aid
- Students receive advance notice of all required weekend training dates
Degree Completion
Students who successfully complete all prerequisite coursework and Police Academy requirements will earn an Associate of Applied Arts and Sciences (A.A.A.S.) Degree in Law Enforcement and Police Academy Certificate.
